Bermuda keen to kickstart beach soccer

The island is to host a tournament with the hope of inspiring locals to play the sport.

Those in Bermuda will soon have the chance to take part in a beach soccer tournament that officials on the island hope will act as a catalyst for the sport locally.

The event will take place on Sunday, August 28th from 11am and the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) are keen to make the event a success in the hope of it leading to a regular summer league as well as international tournaments in Caribbean and CONCACAF regions.

Starting with group stages, the tournament at Horseshoe Bay will then progress to knockout stages, with eight teams due to compete on a first come, first served basis.

BFA bosses are to use the tournament as a way of testing the water with beach soccer in the country, but the organisation is confident local Bermudans will be inspired by the event.

“Our island home is a perfect setting for the short-sided game and the fast paced nature of the game will hopefully entice both players and spectators to attend the event,” the BFA told local media.

“The BFA is extremely pleased to be partnering with the successful Live Free movement for this tournament.

“All proceeds of the tournament will be donated to the Live Free Scholarship Fund in memory of Jason Smith.”

The next FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup is to take place in the region in 2017, with Bermuda’s near-neighbours the Bahamas to take on hosting duties.
