Denis Suarez visits Euro Beach Soccer League

The Barca star stopped by for the Sanxenxo leg of the competition on Saturday.

Latest Barcelona signing Denis Suarez took time out to enjoy some top level beach soccer on Saturday as he visited the Sanxenxo leg of the prestigious Euro Beach Soccer League.

The Spain international visited the second day of the event in Galicia and took the honorary kick-off prior to his country’s 11-3 victory over France – much to the excitement of crowds on Silgar Beach.

The Galicia-born midfielder added an extra buzz to an already hugely popular event in a region that has always placed a big importance on beach soccer.

“I have followed beach soccer for many years and I have watched many of today’s players on television since childhood,” said Suarez, who was unveiled as Barca’s latest signing last week.

The former Manchester City and Villarreal man continued: “I know Madjer, Alan and Belchior of Portugal, for instance, and Amarelle is a great Spanish player too. I know a lot of them.

“The fact that a region like Galicia, where sport and tourism are so important, can host a competition of this level is great news for everyone.”

Suarez, 22, has taken part in beach soccer regularly during his life and acknowledged there is a huge difference between the sport and football.

“It has nothing to do with it,” he said of football’s often-perceived similarity to its beach counterpart.

“Playing beach soccer at this level has as much merit because they keep the ball in the air almost all the time and that’s not easy.

“Of all the times I’ve played beach soccer, I remember it was very hard. Even in pre-season, when we would go to the beach to train, it’s exhausting.”

Following a brief holiday in Galicia, Suarez is due to return to Barcelona next Monday before he starts training with his new club.
