El Salvador, Paraguay claim final spots

Last year’s Juegos Blolivarianos de Playa finalists will meet once again in Iquique.

Paraguay and El Salvador will go head to head in the beach soccer final of the Juegos Blolivarianos de Playa 2016 after negotiating their respective semi-finals on Friday.

The 2014 final saw Paraguay edge El Salvador to claim their second Juegos title but the current silver medal holders will get the chance for revenge after both nations came through close-fought encounters in Iquique, Chile.

Holders Paraguay were first up at Playa Cavancha as they took on Ecuador, with he result tied at 1-1 after the opening period.

A dominant second-frame display from Paraguay saw them rack up five goals – Roberto Fabian Sanchez weighing in with a brace – as Ecuador’s late two-goal salvo failed to throw the champions off course en route to a 6-4 win.

Douglas Alvarado was the hero for El Salvador in their 3-2 win against Chile, having seen his side pegged back to 2-2 going into the final period of a tight encounter.

Despite a valiant effort from the hosts, Alvarado struck with four minutes remaining to set up a rematch of the 2014 final.

Peru will contest the fifth-place play-off against Venezuela after Angelo Gordillo’s double helped them to a 3-2 win against Panama.
