German National League season comes to exciting conclusion

BST Chemnitz defeated the local Rostocker Robben in thrilling finale at DFB-Arena to earn Cup

Chemnitz won the final match in a tightly contested game that ended 3-2. The Chemnitz and Rostocker match as well as the 3rd place match between GSW Beach Pirates and Beach Kick Berlin were both eventful and thrilling with the two being decided by one goal each, and the consolation match could not be decided in regular time or even extra time and went to penalties. The Beach Pirates prevailed 10-9 in penalties in one of the highest scoring matches on the season.

Expectations for the final were at an unbelievable high as the the two squads were destined to meet in the deciding match for the Cup long before the season started. In fact, two weeks earlier, the teams met in the championship for the German Beach Soccer League. That result was much different than this match. For one, Rostocker Robben won the previous match, and two, it was not nearly as close. That match ended with Rostocker up 8-4.

German National Selection Players excelled in this match with Weirauch, Thurk, and Penke all playing key roles. Weirauch scored the games’ first goal to put Chemnitz up early. Thurk responded for the Robben side but in the end, Penke, the Chemnitz goalkeeper, protected his goal just enough to hang on for the close win.

The matches were played on the beautiful Baltic Sea where over 1200 fans saw the final alone. In addition to the bragging rights, now BST Chemnitz is eligible to play in the Euro Winners Cup 2015, a tournament that collects the top league winners from all over Europe and pits them against one another. Last year Rostocker Robben represented Germany, however, the 2013 Russian League champion, BSC Kristall took home the title.
