Havana Shots Aargau enjoy Swiss double

There was also title wins for Chargers Baselland and Winti Panthers in Spiez this weekend.

There was double joy for Havana Shots Aargau’s female side this weekend as the Swiss Beach Soccer season drew to a close.

Both the men’s and women’s league and cup competitions drew to a close in Spiez across Saturday and Sunday with Havana Shots having beaten BSC Wildcats Freiamt 6-4 in the cup final while also finishing top of the table thanks to a 6-3 league success against the runners-up.

In the men’s competitions, the league silverware headed back to a familiar place as BSC Chargers Baselland successfully defended their Schweizermeister title, having finished clear of Grasshopper Club Zurich, Bienne Hatchets and Havana Shots Aargau.

However, the men’s Swiss Cup belonged to Winti Panthers as they prevailed in an enthralling contest against Havana Shots.

The opening stages proved a keenly contested affair as Sandro Denz and Tobi Steinemann sent the teams in 1-1 at the break.

Kevin Ortega Zuluaga and Silvan Conrad looked to have done the damage for Panthers with second-period goals but Steinemann and Samuel Lutz responded in the final 12 minutes to send the game to penalties.

Angi Wuest and Michael Misev both scored from the spot for Aargau while Denz and Silvan Conrad did likewise for Panthers but, after Lutz missed, Stephan Kyek struck the winner for the eventual champions.

The trophy represents Panthers’ first Swiss triumph while they also saw Nicholas Stucki named the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper.

Toni Steinemann was crowned MVP while Glenn Hodel of Grasshopper Club Zurich won Top Goalscorer after finding the net 34 times in the season.

Chargers’ Kevin Wandji Tchatat was named Rookie of the Year.
