Lokomotiv return to Russian summit

Ilya Leonov’s side are national champions again after beating BSC Kristall at the weekend.

Lokomotiv Moscow ended their five-year wait for a fourth Russian Championship at the weekend as they got the better of defending champions BSC Kristall.

In the best-of-three contest played out across the weekend, Lokomotiv got themselves ahead with a 5-3 win on Friday that saw Alexey Makarov and Lucao grab a brace each along with a further strike from Boris Nikonorov.

Ilya Leonov’s men then sealed the title with a comprehensive 4-1 success a day later as Nikonorov, Catarino, Mauricinho and Anton Shkarin found the target.

Lokomotiv – who ended the normal stage of the season on top – add to their domestic titles in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and are now the country’s most successful team with Makarov delighted to help end their wait for a further trophy.

“The feeling is amazing – this is a big occasion, both for Lokomotiv and its fans,” he told Beach Soccer Russia.

“We played two good games and deservedly won in the final. Five years have passed since our last championship and so I think it was time to return to the title. I knew we could do it and we have done it!”

In the third-place play-off, CSKA saw off Moscow rivals Spartak while there were individual awards for Brazil team-mates Rodrigo and Catarino, who were named the competition’s ‘Sandman’ and MVP respectively.

Russia international Maksim Chuzhkov was crowned Best Goalkeeper.
