Rosario Central claim South American title

The Argentinean club side tasted success last weekend against Casa Espana of Paraguay.

Rosario Central were crowned winners of the International South American Clubs event at the Caribe Canalla in Argentina last weekend.

Held in Rosario, the four-team event also included Paraguayan champions Casa Espana, Malvin Beach Soccer from Uruguay and Brazilian side Avai.

Rosario – who reached the final of the Copa Uruguay in August – clinched the title last weekend on home sand after edging Casa Espana 2-1 having fallen behind early on.

Former Rosario man Roberto Acuna put his side in front but goals from Dario Quiles and Lucas Ponzetti turned the game around and handed Rosario the title, although goalkeeper Sebastian Azimonti gave his side a scare by conceding a late penalty that was ultimately missed.

Malvin Soccer captured third place after victory in their play-off against Avai while the Uruguayan side also had Pampero Sobral named Player of the Tournament.

Rosario’s Azimonti picked up the Best Goalkeeper Award as club beach soccer in Argentina took another step forward.
