Sanxenxo welcomes Euro Beach Soccer League stage

Excitement is building for one of this year’s EBSL hosts after Wednesday’s official handover.

The second stage of this year’s Euro Beach Soccer League (EBSL) was formally presented to Sanxenxo in Galicia on Wednesday.

The stunning coastal destination in north-west Spain will host three days of thrilling beach soccer between 8th and 10th July where the hosts will compete with Ukraine, Romania and France in Group One of Division A.

World champions and near-neighbours Portugal will face Switzerland, Greece and Germany in Group Two, with locals and tourists alike set to witness first-hand some of Europe’s best players and teams battle it out.

Officials from the Galician Football Federation (FGF) and Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW) were present at Wednesday’s news conference along with Gonzalo Pita, Mayor of Sanxenxo, and FIFA Beach Soccer Instructor Amarelle.

As the tournament was officially presented to Sanxenxo – around six weeks before the big kick-off – all present remarked on what promises to be an exceptional event.

Rafael Louzan, President of the Galician Football Federation, said: “It is a great opportunity for Galician football to make a huge step forward with such an important event. Galicia and its people deserve such a competition in their region.”

Gonzalo Pita, Mayor of Sanxenxo, said: “It is a great honour for Sanxenxo to host such a top-class competition. This EBSL stage will show our city and its people to the whole world thanks to beach soccer’s massive television exposure. At the same time, it will also give our tourism industry a huge boost.”

Gabino Renales, Deputy Vice-President of Beach Soccer Worldwide, said: “We are thankful to the city of Sanxenxo and the Galician Football Federation for their trust and support, as well as their enthusiasm. Having the chance to bring such a prestigious event to one of Spain’s beach soccer hotbeds is something very exciting.”

Former FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Golden Ball winner Amarelle said: “Galicia has always loved beach soccer and this competition is not only something we deserve but one we will also enjoy. The EBSL involves the best teams in Europe and the spectacle it brings is just awesome.”
