Viareggio, Lady Terracina land Scudetti

The winners were crowned in Riccione as Serie A concluded on Sunday.

Viareggio maintained their impressive run of form in 2016 by capturing the Serie A title on Sunday in dramatic fashion against Lazio in Riccione.

The men from Tuscany have already lifted the Euro Winners Cup and the Coppa Italia this year and made it a clean sweep at the Marano Beach Stadium by claiming a 7-6 win against Lazio, with the help of Gori’s hat-trick and a brace from Marinai.

Viareggio faced defending champions Terracina in the quarter-finals and swiftly progressed courtesy of a 5-1 success while Lazio needed penalties to get past Catania after the sides shared eight goals in normal time.

Pisa and Villafranca were then beaten 3-2 by Viareggio and Lazio respectively in the semis – Villafranca eventually ensuring third-place after an extra-time victory – before all eyes turned to the final as both sides sought to win the Scudetto for the first time.

Two early goals from Gori helped Viareggio into a 4-2 lead after 12 minutes while the Italian scored again in the second period alongside Torres to amass a 6-3 advantage.

However, Lazio sprung to life in the final period as Capo, Bernardo and Rui Mota all found the target to level matters going into the last five minutes.

But Marinai made himself the hero, registering the winner with two minutes remaining as Viareggio saw out a narrow win in an enthralling contest to make sure of silverware.

In the battle for the women’s Serie A title, things proved equally dramatic as Lady Terracina battled back from 3-1 down to win a entertaining final by the odd goal in seven.

Goals at either end of the first period from Privitera and Maiorca had the sides level going into a second period that Catania largely bossed – Napoli and Fazio giving them a healthy advantage only for Maiorca to give Terracina hope with a goal late on.

It proved a catalyst for the eventual champions who levelled through Ferrer before Naticchioni grabbed the winner and sealed a memorable success.
