Women’s competition takes shape but plenty left to play for

A number of teams booked their place in the last-16 but opportunity knocks for others on Thursday.

Thursday promises a number of top-of-the-table clashes and lots of drama in the women’s section of the Euro Winners Cup after a high-scoring second day in Catania.

Portsmouth Ladies won a thriller on Wednesday morning to claim their second victory of Group B – Widdowson proving the matchwinner in the final seconds to edge HTC Zwolle 4-3 in Group B.

They were joined on maximum points by Grasshopper Club Zurich when they beat ASD Lady Terracina 5-3 to claim their second Euro Winners Cup success.

Both will meet on Thursday to battle for top spot – having ensured qualification – while it is a similar situation in Group C after BeachKick Ladies Berlin and WFC Zvezda moved into the next stage.

BeachKick survived a spirited effort from Catanzaro to win out 5-4 in a thrilling contest while Zvezda had the impressive Federova to thank for their 12-0 hammering of Nomme Kalju –  the midfielder scoring six times in total.

Things are tighter in Group A, with only three points separating 1st from third, after hosts DomusBet Catania Ladies picked up their first points of the competition against Sparta Daleszyce 7-3.

DTS Ede overcame Sogesport Club Esportiu to stay top, although much will be decided in Group A on the final day.

Elsewhere, while automatic qualification is largely sorted, the chance to qualify as one of the two best third-placed teams remains up for grabs.
