There were goals galore as the 12 ladies teams kicked off the action in Catania.
The women’s competition at the Euro Winners Cup 2016 got underway on Tuesday, with BeachKick Ladies Berlin and DTS Ede among the big scorers in Catania.
Wiegand and Gabriel scored seven goals between them as Berlin beat Nomme Kalju 8-1 in their opening game while Ede proved too hot for Sparta Dalesyzce to handle in Group A, running out 9-2 winners.
Elsewhere around the pitches, a hat-trick from the impressive Federova was crucial to WFC Zvezda’s 4-3 victory over Catanzaro in Group C as her goals decided a gripping encounter.
Zvezda threw away the lead early on but recovered to claim the points while Group C rivals Grasshopper Club Zurich also started well in Sicily.
The Swiss side powered to a deserved 8-3 win over HTC Zwolle, although there was disappointment for hosts DomusBet Catania as they slipped to defeat against Sogesport Club Esportiu in the main stadium.
The Spanish side kept clear of Catania for much of the win to deservedly edge the home favourites while Portsmouth Ladies survived a late fightback to edge ASD Lady Terracina 5-3 in Group B’s opening game.
