Women’s teams in Spain battle for Euro Winners Cup spot

Five sides will go head to head in Melilla for a place at the event next year.

This year has undoubtedly seen women’s beach soccer take major steps forward and that progression will continue over the next few days as the RFEF Copa is played out in Spain.

Already in 2016, the beach soccer calendar has seen the first female competitions at events such as the Euro Winners Cup and the Mundialito in Cascais, with the Copa set to contribute a team to feature at the former in 2017.

Held in Melilla, San Lorenzo, from today until Saturday, the competition will see local sides CD Higicontrol and Espiguera Feminas battle it out with CD Bala Azul from Murcia, CFP Caceres from Extremadura and FP Huelva of Andalucia.

Competing in a five-team league table, the winner will not only secure the trophy but also a place at next year’s Euro Winners Cup.

Last year the women’s competition was won by Swiss side Grasshopper Club Zurich while Spain’s representative – Sogesport Club Esportiu – finished seventh.

At the Women’s Euro Beach Soccer Cup, which formed part of the Mundialito in Cascais, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Switzerland, England and Greece took part.

After the group stage, Spain were crowned winners with a 2-1 success against the Swiss.
