Copa do Brasil gets underway in Rio de Janeiro

Day one of the Copa do Brasil sees 42 goals scores in the opening four games

The 2018 edition of the Copa do Brasil was kicked off in style, as the opening day saw no less than 42 goals (10.5 per game!) and four normal time victories, some of which were much closer than others…

The goalkeepers were shown no mercy at Rio de Janeiro’s Parque Olímpico da Barra on the first day of the Copa do Brasil, and in one of the more closely-matched ties, Murici-AL lost out by four goals to seven against Vitória, with Nelito netting a hat-trick.

In the next bout, the former champions Vasco da Gama showed didn’t hold back against America-RN. Antônio and Paulinho each grabbed three goals, with Benjinha, Rafinha, Jordan and Lucão also getting on the scoresheet to blow away their rivals 10-3.

Defending champions of the competition, Sampaio Corrêa, took on Gama-DF in the day’s third game. With a team made up almost entirely of players from the Brazilian national team, this game saw by far the most decisive and merciless victory of the day. The scorers were: Filipe (4), Zé Lucas (2), Eudin (2), Serginho, Bruno Xavier and Datinha, taking the final tally to 11, while Gama were unable to find the opposition net.

Rounding off the day was the most competitive match, a close 4-3 victory for Botafogo, whose opponents, Boavista, fought hard but will have to wait until tomorrow’s match against Vasco da Gama for their next chance of points in the cup.
