Havana Shots and Portsmouth BSC to vie for European glory

The Swiss and the English prevailed in the semi-finals and will now fight for gold in this Euro Winners Cup Nazaré 2017

BSC Havana Shots and Portsmouth BSC will clash tomorrow for the European crown at the Women’s Euro Winners Cup Nazaré 2017, following their narrow wins in the semi-finals of the competition.

For the second time, the final of this continental showdown will have a Swiss team, after Havana Shots Aargau secured their place in the competition’s decider, thanks to a consistent performance against Spaniards Higicontrol Melilla.

After a tightly contested first leg, in which both sides exchanged strokes to keep the score 2 apiece, the Alpine took off during the second leg. The 2-1 run in the middle frame gave Havana Shots the lead in the game, which they would confirm in the last period, with Daniela Pluss’s 5-3.

The depth of the Swiss bench made the difference in the game, as Higicontrol Melilla felt the weight of the minutes as of the last break, and they did not find the energy they needed to counteract their opponent’s game.

In the other semi-final, a 3-0 run in the second leg had Portsmouth BSC securing the win over last year’s 4th-ranked side WFC Zvedza, from Russia.

As expected, the semi-finals facing the English and the Russian were fiercely balanced, and the extremely mature display by Pompey ended up making the difference.

Despite the three-goal disadvantage, Zvezda kept fighting, managing to pull two goals back to reach the final minutes of the game just one goal dow. But Portsmouth knew how to handle the pressure, and resisted the Russian siege to squeeze onto the decider of the competition.
