Italy edge towards quarters

Oman fought hard but were not able to topple the European side in their second group match

Italy moved to within touching distance of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Portugal 2015 quarter-finals after they secured a 4-2 win over Oman to solidify their place at the top of Group B.

The pair had never met before and, backed by a vocal local crowd rooting for the underdog, the Gulf side took an early lead through Yahya Al Araimi.

It lasted only four minutes though, as two goals in 25 seconds allowed the third-place finishers in Europe to fight back, as Emmanuele Zurlo and Simone Marinai saw the tide turn.

Gabriele Gori added to his hat-trick in the 6-1 win over Costa Rica to gain control and, despite Khalid Al Oraimi giving Oman hope, Zurlo’s superb overhead kick sealed the points for Italy. Oman’s hopes of making the next round rely on Costa Rica picking up a win against Switzerland.
