Reigning champions suffer defeat on day one
Nazaré side Sotao miss out to Lokrains while early upset sees Euro Winners retention hopes dented for Zvezda
Lokrians, Stade de Reims, ASD Terracina Femminile, Playas de San Javier, Lady Terracina and Lady Grembach all kicked off their Euro Winners campaigns with wins as current holders miss out to late goal.
There were just three seconds between WFC Zvezda and extra time, but a dramatic late effort sees the Russian side face defeat for the first time since the semi-finals of 2017.
Italian side Lokrians Beach Club faced their first test in Nazaré with the home crowd cheering on Nazaré opponents ACD O Sotao.
Despite this, Lokrians were clinical with their chance and put away six goals and denying a Sotao comeback to put themselves in a strong position going into the second game.
The reigning champions, WFC Zvezda suffered an intense defeat in their first match against French side, Stade de Reims.
It was a tight match, which took a long time to see the first goal, but the French just edged the Russians with a late goal from Gomes, who completed a brace. This was their first defeat in the competition since losing to England’s Portsmouth here in Nazaré two years ago.
The victors will face CFP Cáceres Femenino tomorrow for the chance to seal the top spot, while Zvezda will play them on Wednesday.
The Group C action got underway when Beach Soccer DTS Ede met ASD Terracina Beach Soccer Femminile in a close and exciting match. At the end of the final period the teams couldn’t be separated, and the match went to penalties.
The Italian held their nerve to convert two penalties and take a point against Beach Soccer DTS Ede.
Later in the day, a star-studded Higicontrol Melilla breeze past Marseille Beach Team, scoring ten goals to the French tally of four. The goals came from familiar faces, including England number ten and one of 2018’s three best players, Molly Clark.
AIS Playas de San Javier handed an 8-0 defeat to the first-times, Red Devils Ladies Chojnice, in their opening match in Nazaré.
Doubles for England’s Sarah Kempson and Spain’s Carol Gonzalez helped the Spanish ladies go top and they will now face their other group rival and form champions, BSC Havana Shots Aargau on Wednesday.
The Swiss side will enter the tournament with a match against the Red Devils tomorrow.
The only game in Group E on day one of the Women’s Euro Winners Cup saw ASD Lady Terracina BS deal a heavy defeat to the youngest squad in Nazaré, Nomme Kalju from Estonia.
Noele Bastos scored a hat-trick for the Italian side as they await the next challenge, which will come against Rose Platja (Spain) on Wednesday.
Before then, Nomme Kalju will have the chance to pick up points against the Spanish and keep hopes of making the next round alive.
The women’s Euro Winners Cup was kicked off by Lady Grembach EE Lodz (Poland) and Fundacio Terrassa FC 1906 (Spain) with an extremely tight match which looked to be heading to extra time.
But it was one of the three best players of last season that made the difference, as Adriele struck a superb winner in the last minute, clinching three essential points for the Lady Grembach.
Emilia Tornqvist scored a fine hat-trick in the second game in Group F, assisting Djurgardens IF FF to edge a tight game against Beach Soccer Zeeland.
The Swedes won the match 6-4 and will face Lady Grembach tomorrow.
