Thank you, Joao

When lights went off after the thrilling Euro Beach Soccer League Superfinal last week, one man remained next to the sand pitch, struggling with his memories. Struggling with his bad ones, and embracing the sweet just once again. This man was Joao Almeida, the international FIFA Beach Soccer Referee who blew his whistle for the last time in the Lisbon showpiece. His last match, the Switzerland-Russia right before the final he could not judge because Portugal was one of the contenders, ended with a loud ovation in appreciation to his commitment and trajectory within this sport.

Behind him, more than 250 international matches since he jumped onto the sand for the first time in 1996, in a little tournament in Foz do Arelho. In 2002, this beach soccer lover refereed his first Euro Beach Soccer League showdown, the one facing Spain and Italy in Carcavelos, and began a brilliant career that placed him among the best Beach Soccer referees in the World. His participation in seven World Cups, several Mundialitos, EBSL Finals and hundreds of top level international games confirm his hierarchy in our sport.

When talking to him, Joao makes everyone feel the magic of beach soccer, transmitting the joy he feels in it. He only speaks words of gratitude for everyone, although he has had to undergo strained situations in such a long career. He will never forget the trophies he received from Albert II, Prince of Monaco in 2006, or the trophy handled by Mr. Joao Avelange, former FIFA president, in 2005.

He won’t forget either all the funny moments beach soccer has given him. He specially remembers the one he lived in Brighton, England, when he found two referee mates who were in his football boots and socks to jump onto the sand. “Are you sure you need them?”, he told them, trying to overcome the laughter…

Beach Soccer players, coaches and supporters will never forget him either. The respect he achieved on the sand after his solid and communicative refereeing represents his best legacy. Joao, though, will keep on witnessing beach soccer matches, a game he loves, you can bet on it. But, now, look for him on the stands, not on the sand…
