Uruguay first to secure semi-final place in Rio
Normal time wins for Uruguay and Colombia put pressure on Brazil in Group A as Argentina take third victory
The defending champions Brazil, and already-qualified Paraguay, enjoyed a rest on day three, while as-of-yet unbeaten group mates, Uruguay and Argentina, keep the remain undefeated.
At the top of Group A, Uruguay became the first team to make it to the semi-finals, having taken nine points out of nine with a decisive 5-1 win against Bolivia, who are now out of the competition.
The group leaders will take a well-earned rest on day four while the pressure is on Brazil to reclaim the top spot.
Colombia registered their first win at the Parque Olímpico in Rio de Janeiro to keep a slight hope of making the next round alive, beating Ecuador by eight goals to four. The Ecuadorians, along with Bolivia, are the only teams left in Group A yet to pick up points in the CONMEBOL Eliminatorias Mundial FIFA Fútbol Playa 2019.
If Ecuador do not beat Brazil in normal time on Saturday, then they will be out of the running for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Paraguay.
In Group B Argentina also completed a three-game unbeaten run, but one of their victories came from the penalty spot, meaning that they took away just a single point, and yesterday’s match against Chile went to extra time, seeing the men in blue and white drop another precious point.
The other match in Group B also went to extra time, where Peru saved their chance of qualification by converting a late freekick to snatch two points from Venezuela who, like Chile, are now out of the running for World Cup qualification.
