WFC Zvedza back on top in Alanya

Gaps start to widen in the World Winners group as Zvezda reassume pole position

Day four in Alanya saw the difference between the top and bottom teams in the women’s group extended to six as WFC Zvedza return to the action with a comfortable win.

The Russian champions cruised to their first normal time victory against Tokyo Lequios LD to claim three points a retake the lead in the group.

In the other game, a much tighter affair saw Polish side Lady Grembach down NorCal in extra time to go level with Lokrians on points.

Tokyo Lequios LD (JPN) 2-7 WFC Zvezda (RUS)

WFC Zvezda had been knocked off the topspot by Pavia Lokrians on Wednesday but the Russians were back to business after their rest day, sweeping aside Tokyo Lequios with seven goals.

Grechikhina scored after a matter of seconds, but before Zvezda could build momentum, Saki struck right back. As the period progressed, England’s Molly Clark retook the lead and Ivanshika extended it before the whistle.

From then on, the Japanese were unable to control Zvezda’s pressure and Cherniakova put away three sublime goals to push the match out of reach of the Tokyo side.

Yoko managed a second for Ko Yoshida’s ladies, but a brilliant piece of play was polished off by Gorshkova to take the final score to 2-7, and Zvezda overtake Lokrians to go top once more.

NorCal BS (USA) 3-4 Lady Grembach Lodz (POL) *AET

Both sides were on three points going into this fixture and, although it always promised to be a tight match-up, the Poles snatched two points in the end to move above their US rivals in the group.

Brazilian striker Lorena scored her sixth goal of the campaign, taking her to the top of the scoring chart, grabbing an early lead for Grembach. Zak added another and NorCal looked in danger of letting the game slip.

However, a rocket from Hall pulled a goal back before the first whistle and a second strike in the second period, this time a brilliant freekick from distance, levelled the score.

In the final third, a goal went in at each end, as Quigley and Gozdek added their names to the scoresheet and, tied at 3-3, the match went to extra time.

It was then that keeper Anna Beatriz bagged a vital two points with a long-range effort for Lady Grembach, who take their points total tally to five.
